Most common bags

Updated: Apr 30

Handbags are one of the most characteristic accessories in the female wardrobe. Each season its volume varies, larger or smaller, but what never changes is the structure. Would you be able to decipher the name of each bag?

Before getting into the name of the most common bags, let's learn a little about the history of this accessory.

Unfortunately, there is no reliable record of when the first bag in history appeared or its exact origin. But you should know that since the beginning of the existence of humanity it was already present in some way, as shown by some petroglyphs of the Mesopotamian civilization. In them you can see images with feminine features that carry a kind of bag hanging from the arm. It is important to rule out that at that historical stage the population was nomadic and moved to obtain food. For this reason, they needed something useful to be able to transport them. Called Alforje, which was a kind of bag made with leather that could be carried tied at the waist or hung from the shoulders.

As we approach the Middle Ages the bag underwent changes. In museums of archeology and ethnology, numerous long and narrow leather bags are kept, about ten inches wide and equal in height.

During the 16th and 17th centuries the bag was filled with ornaments, charms and details that made it a small work of art. Ladies of lineage gave a bag as a souvenir or token of esteem to a gentleman or friend embroidered by them. The mystery bag became famous whose interior had secret compartments for: jewels, coins ...

In the 18th century, a new bag model was born: the wallet-style bag. It was made of various materials such as silk or leather. It was originally used by both women and men to carry documents.

The origin of the handbag as we know it today arose from the increase in travel during the 19th century. With the advent of steam locomotives around 1850, certain existing firms, such as Hermès (known for its saddles and saddlebags) and Louis Vuitton (manufactured the cabin trunks for Nalopeón III) changed the orientation of their business towards the luxury travel items. In addition to trunks and common suitcases, they developed leather bags with wooden or metal frames. These bags, which people carried with them instead of being stored in the luggage rack, were called handbags, in order to differentiate them from other luggage. With the advent of the automobile in the early 20th century, Gucci and Prada started a similar business in Italy, dedicated to luxury travel items. In the 1930s, Coco Chanel was the first to design useful pockets and mirrors for her bags, which allowed the various objects to be stored inside in an orderly manner. Since this date, the bags have practically the same structure. So much so that some brands, after the bag became famous for wearing it by a celebrity, have turned it into a flagship element of the brand, such as Kelly or Birkin by Hermès or Boy model by Chanel.

Now, let's see what the most common bags that we use in our day to day are called:
