Last week's post was dedicated to the big fashion event that took place in NY, theMET gala. We commented on its origin, its importance and its theme for this 2019. However, it wasn´t the only important fashion event that took place that week in the Big Apple. You will ask, what else could happen? Well, I tell you. This great city hosted last Friday the parade of the Luis Vouitton Cruise Collection 2020. An event that hosted many celebrities and fans of the brand in the front row and that was a resounding success.
As an explanatory note, the cruise collections, in the world of fashion, had their origin in the demand for summer clothes by millionaires who in cold times traveled to warm places and when they went to the stores they found that what was exposed was autumn / winter clothes. In this way, the luxury brands saw a gap in the market that they fill by making summer clothes with nautical airs and selling them in the winter season. Nowadays, the same is also true of a collection of winter garments that is put on sale during the summer and is called pre-fall. These cruise collections are also a way to learn about future trends, a kind of mini preview of the collection. Since the original audience of these cruise collections are millionaires and fashionistas, shows are used to present them in exotic destinations, places with a large concentration of target audiences to which the proposals approach.
Although the destinations of these collections are usually places like Dubai, Shanghai ... etc. However, Nicolas Ghesquière (creative director of Louis Vuitton) has surprised us by choosing the emblematic TWA Flight Center at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York as the setting to present his 2020 cruise collection. But, why would he have chosen this destination? The answer lies in the inspiration of this collection.
Terminal 5 of the John F. Kennedy Airport, better known as the TWA Flight Center, is one of the architectural treasures that the architect Eero Saarinen created on behalf of a huge bird in the middle of "Jet Age", where the dream of connection with other places in the world became a tangible reality. As the designer explained: "Leave a place, to return again. The philosophy of departing for new destinations, leaving behind a small part of yourself returning later with much more is the essence of this new collection". The flow of cultures that, a city like New York, has and its dialogue with the city of Paris since the first transatlantic crosses to connect the collections between these two great cities of fashion, continues today with the presentation of this collection inspired by the "Jet Age".

The "Jet Age" is defined as a period in the history of aviation in which turbine-powered aircraft began to be used and for the social change that this produced. Jet planes could fly much higher, faster and farther than the old piston thrusters, which made transcontinental and intercontinental travel much faster and easier. This term was coined in the 1940s. On that date, that concept only applied to military aircraft. It wouldn´t be until 1957, when it began to use this term for commercial aircraft. Passengers could fly to their destinations nonstop, making much of the world accessible in a single day of travel for the first time. With this change, large passenger planes could transport more passengers, reduce air fares and have greater accessibility so that everyone could travel outside their own countries.
And going back to the collection, how is it possible to unite all these concepts and transform them into clothes? Magic! The designers with their creativity and ingenuity create true magic. In this way, the silhouettes and reliefs of the most emblematic buildings of the French capital, are stamped in a sophisticated way on the garments of the collection. The delicate embroideries and brocades represent the "elegant foreigners" who stroll and draw attention among the streets of Manhattan. In short, such classic and refined stitching elements are fused with details in acid colors that represent the union between the Parisian aesthetic and the bright light that illuminates the city of New York.
