FASHION TREND: The return of military style

Today's post I want to devote to the analysis of a trend that is going strong this season, the military style. Both, on runways and in street style, is appreciated the return of the functional fashion that prevailed in the war years of the Second World War .

Brands such as Fendi, Givenchy, Phillip Plein, Marine Serre or Max Mara, as well as Belstaff, have imbibed military aesthetics to a greater or lesser extent in their spring collections. An universe that as a spring trend is not restricted only to camouflage print, khaki color or cargo pants but goes much further. It is one of the most powerful revivals in recent seasons. Observing this trend I asked myself, Where does this style of clothing come from? And I decided to investigate it!

It´s very simple to place this fashion style in a time line: it coincides with the main war conflicts of the century. A fashion characterized by being functional, comfortable and practical but without leaving aside the style. The Second Wold War influenced the creation of a more simple fashion. The fall of France into the Nazi´s Army  hands had consequences for European fashion. This panorama of crisis caused fashion to express a rapid transformation that led to much lighter and more comfortable silhouettes, which allowed free dom of movement. The lines adopted were very simple and functional characteristics of military and sports garments (such as pockets). With the outbreak of the war, rationing came. For his initiatives, in terms of fashion, Great Britain was one of the indisputable protagonists. How could the British government convince people that they could dress well with such austerity? Thanks to the help of the designers. To ensure the interests of English fashion, in 1942 the London Society of Fashion Designers (INSOC) was created. In this framework of the Utility Clothing that the government devised, this group of creators designed a series of garments at affordable prices for everyone. As a kind of antecedent of the fast-fashion distribution.

As an anecdote, the "Do-it-yourself" became fashionable at this time. The English campaign Make Do and Mend invited individual creativity, with brochures that included tutorials in the purest Youtube style.

On the other hand, the incorporation of women in the labor world helped to change the perception of this type of garments. They needed clothes with comfortable lines, but not too loose and without details that could be hooked to the machinery they were using. So Muriel King gave a twist to the work garment par excellence: the jumpsuit, and put it in fashion. This new garment, the jumpsuit, was developed in many versions in the USA, Italy, Great Britain, Germany and even in Russia.

Therefore, this season SS19 is inspired by all this development of military-style utilitarian fashion, betting on jumpsuits, military print, cargo pants and saharian jackets (of which we will talk in the next post).

I hope you liked the post today and I hope you in the next!  :) Do you want to buy a military style jumpsuit now?
