I don't know if it happens to you too, but I like to wonder about the origin and history of things. I think it is very important to know the origins of something in order to know how to apply and renew it in the present moment. Following in the footsteps of the past, we can create our own in the present and allow them to continue to evolve in the future.
For this reason, when I analyzed the trends of this spring / summer season and saw that, one of the key garments this season, was a basic like the bomber jacket. So I wanted to find out what its origin was and share it here.
Bomber jackets have become one of the favorite garments of many when it comes to dressing because it is a basic in the wardrobe of men or a women. There´s so much variety of them, in different fabrics and patterns, that they allow you to wear it in any outfit. You just have to know how to combine this jacket to get a good look. We will also discuss this topic in the article, but first let us know its origin.
We are going to move to 1917, almost ending the First World War, to know its origin. At that time, the United States Army designed a garment for its pilots to keep warm from the cold in the heights. At that time, pilots made their flights in open cabins and needed to bundle up. However, in 1926, a British named Leslie Irvin, designed the model that we know today and that would be used by the American air force during the Second World War. This is how the
B3 Bomber Jacket was born, a jacket specially designed for high altitude flights in which 60º below zero were reached. These jackets were made on the inside of sheep's wool and on the outside lined with fur. They also had wide flaps with hermetic closures. It was called Bomber, because the pilots who used it frequently were the bomber pilots, who were those who flew at high altitude.
In 30´s, this garment was renewed to make it lighter, replacing the wool lining with a cotton one and the horse skin exterior for being more practical. Not only its fabric was modified, but also its structure, making the waist shorter and adjusted with elastics at the cuffs, so that it was doubly comfortable in the small cabins and the air did not enter. This version was given the name A-2 Bomber Jacket.
Finally, in 40´s, in the middle of World War II, these jackets began to be made in synthetic and waterproof fabrics because it is more practical and functional. They would be their successors called B-15, which are what we know today as the typical Bomber.
After the end of the War, this jacket had become a basic outwear for the society of this time, which is why it began to become popular among the younger public. Such was its success that the Hollywood industry adapted this garment as its own, integrating it into the clothing of great movies, such as "Rebel Without a Cause" or " The Great Escape".
In 1960s, the reggae lovers of the time took over, probably because they found it similar to the famous Harrington jacket worn by members of the Ivy League, becoming a baseball format.
In 70's, the big magazines did not leave it behind and various singers began to use it with a more folk style.
Currently this jacket has become on one of the most favorite outwear garrment of many for its usefulness and the great variety that there is in styles, shapes, colors and finishes.
Without a doubt, reviewing the history of this jacket so common in our closets, we can realize how military clothing has become a legacy of our current history.
And now that we know its history ... How can we use it in our looks?
Solid bomber jacket
When a garment is plain and unicolor, the margin of error is very small. But be careful because you can get boring. You can go for safe shades like black, white, and gray. These will let you put together many outfits and being neutral will make it easier to make combinations. For a great style, choose to wear under a T-shirt or sweatshirt with a text or drawing, a textured sweater or polo shirt or a printed shirt to give the outfit some life. This option is perfect for times of the year like spring or fall.
Another combination a little more daring is to opt for bomber jackets that are metallic or with textures. You can wear them with your favorite jeans. Let the bomber be the protagonist. This outfit can be perfect for going out at night if you go to a relaxed meeting.
Sporty style accessory
No one says you can't look fabulous when you wear sportswear. The bombers allow you to add that extra to your outfit that will make it level up. You can easily wear sneakers and sports pants with it.
Bomber jacket with dresses
For girls, dresses are also an excellent option for wearing bomber jackets. You can look for a more casual style with one that is long cotton and sports shoes that match your jacket or if on the other hand you want to look a bit more feminine, you can wear a short flowery dress with heels and a bomber jacket that completes the outfit . Look for the latter to be neutral or contrast with the colors of your dress.
In short, with bomber jackets you can hardly make mistakes since they are a garment that looks good almost always. Although there are certain things that you should never do: buy a very small size. By design, the jacket is short, but that does not mean that it should be below the navel. Make sure you get the right one so it looks perfect. Nor should they be bought very large. These are not tight to the body but their correct measurement is on the waist.
What´s your opinion? Are you a bomber jacket lover?
