As I promised you on last post ... Today's post will deal with the return of the Saharina jacket. This type of jacket follows the trend of military style (which we discussed in the previous post) that is so fashionable this season ss19. If last week we asked ourselves where this trend came from (emphasizing the return of the jumpsuit), the same thing happens this week with this type of jacket that we see in all the catwalks, street style, stores, shop windows and magazines. Where does this jacket come from? Who made it fashionable?
This jacket made of cotton or linen, was created for the first time to bring lightness to the uniform of the British military who were on mission in warm places like India during the nineteenth century. It wasn´t until 1967 when the designer Ives Saint Laurent (revolutionary of the feminine wardrobe) recreated it to introduce it in his catwalks. Forgotten until then, Ives extended the neckline and put laces, and even lengthened to transform it into dress but continued maintaing the four pockets characteristic of this jacket. From then, this type of jacket would become an icon of the French fashion brand as well as the smoking.
Decades later, the photographer Franco Rubartelli immortalized this jacket in the famous photoshoot he made with the models Veruska and Claudia Schiffer, which made it become fashionable again.
This season, Anthony Vaccarello, current creative director of the Saint Laurent Firm, rescues the 1967 archives to reinvent the safari jacket. On this occasion, the designer retains the structure of this jacket (its 4 pocket included) but modifies the fabric, replacing the linen with leather.
Who doesn´t want to wear this jacket now? A perfect garment that I invite you to try and incorporate in your wardrobe. If you already have it, leave us your comment with your experience!
